The Kelowna Report
2011 Christmas Greetings from Len and Betty Lou,

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 1 ½ years since moving to Kelowna, but we’ve adapted and are very comfortable
now enjoying the new lifestyle in our Village community.  While a large part of our heart and soul remain in Regina and
Sask. with friends and families, we’re concentrating on fully experiencing the beautiful Okanagan with its scenic lakes and
orchards, wine festivals, warmer weather with virtually no wind and no mosquitoes!!
Fortunately our health is good, and we are actively involved: golfing in several groups, the duplicate bridge club, Kelowna
Newcomers, wine club events, and various theme and dance parties. Betty Lou is on the Gallagher’s Social Committee
and Len is on the Strata Council, as well as joining the K40 Club.
Having active and healthy family nearby is an even bigger bonus. Betty Lou’s Mom in doing well in a private care home;
we visit with son Jeff, wife Petrina and grandsons Kieran and Karsen, cheering them on in football, hockey and music. We’
ve also exchanged several visits with daughter Lisa - just a short hop away in Vancouver. Although, daughter Marcy,
husband Shayne and granddaughters Somer and Skye live far away in London UK, we’ve enjoyed a vacation with them in
the Mediterranean and they will be visiting us in January 2012!
Len has just completed his commitments as CAO Past National President, including the chairing and co-editing a book on
the History of Optometry in Canada and will begin full-time retirement in the New Year.  Hard to believe, but true!
Meanwhile, our travels continue; in Feb. we cruised South America – Chile, Argentina and the Falklands, where Betty Lou’
s life-time dream of ‘walking amongst the penguins’ came true. They actually came running up to her as she crouched
down and chatted with them! In March we visited Disneyland California with Jeff’s family and spent a few days visiting
friends in Palm Springs. In April Lisa joined us touring Rome and Berlin, then connecting with Marcy’s family for a
Mediterranean cruise and ending up in London UK for Easter. It was Winnipeg in July for the National CAO Congress
where Len officially finished his council duties and helped launch the History Book. October was memorable as we
received a special invitation to attend the Sask Optometric AGM where Len not only received his retirement plaque but
was awarded (huge surprise!) an Honorary Membership! We also enjoyed visiting with colleagues, friends and former
neighbours in Regina before flying on to Las Vegas for a week’s holiday. In November we vacationed in Maui enroute to
the Grey Cup in Vancouver. The sun and snorkelling (with huge turtles!) in Maui was great and Riderville as well BC Place
was awesome! The game itself just wasn’t as exciting without our Riders being in it. Next year! Now, after all of these
travels it will be good to be ‘home’ for a traditional family Christmas.

Best wishes for good Health and Happiness in the New Year!
